NCAA brings women’s volleyball championship to Sprint Center Kansas City Business Journal
The NCAA said Friday that Kansas City will host the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball
Championship at the Sprint Center on Dec. 16 and 18.
The University of Missouri-Kansas City and the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission will co-
host the tournament. Sprint Center and the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association helped
prepare the winning bid.
Marie Robbins, chairwoman of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee, said in a
release that several attractive bids came in.
“I think our focus was on continuing the growth that the volleyball championship has experienced
over the last four years,” Robbins said in the release. “We felt that both Kansas City and Louisville
demonstrated a level of commitment to this championship that will not only translate into a great
student-athlete experience, but also a continuation of the championship’s recent growth.”
Tim Hall, director of athletics for UMKC, said in the release that securing the volleyball tournament
underscores the commitment the region has to intercollegiate athletics and women’s sports.
In conjunction with the championship, the American Volleyball Coaches Association will host its
annual convention for it 4,500 members.
The entire event is expected to generate a $5 million in economic effect and 15,000 hotel room
nights.
